What Is The Switch POE?
A POE (Power over Ethernet) switch is a network switch that is capable of providing power to devices over Ethernet cables. This allows devices such as phones, cameras, and access points to be powered remotely, without the need for a separate power source.
What Is The Normal Switch?
A normal switch is a networking device that allows devices on a network to communicate with each other by forwarding data packets between them. A normal switch typically operates at layer 2 (data link layer) of the OSI model, forwarding data based on the MAC (Media Access Control) address of the devices.
Key difference between POE Switch and a Normal Switch
Here are some key points about how a POE Switch and a normal switch work:
POE Switch:
Provides power over Ethernet cables to devices such as phones, cameras, and access points.
Uses the same Ethernet cables that are used for data communication to transmit power.
Can power devices remotely, without the need for a separate power source.
Can be used in a variety of applications, including security systems, VoIP phone systems, and wireless access points.
Normal switch:
Allows devices on a network to communicate with each other by forwarding data packets between them.
Operates at layer 2 (data link layer) of the OSI model, forwarding data based on the MAC addresses of the devices.
Can be used to connect devices in a local area network (LAN), such as computers, printers, and servers.
Can be used to connect different segments of a network, allowing devices on different segments to communicate with each other.
What types of POE Switches are there?
Commercial grade:
These switches are the most common and can be used in any environment. They are available in a wide range of price points, from less than $50 to hundreds of dollars. These switches will provide power for up to 15 devices at a time. The downside is that they don’t have much flexibility as far as features go. However, if you are looking for something simple and affordable, this is the way to go.
Industrial grade:
These switches are designed for rugged environments and come at a higher price point than commercial-grade switches. They tend to have more features than their commercial counterparts and usually support larger loads (more than 8 devices). Industrial-grade switches also typically have better power management capabilities so they can be used in applications where power needs to be conserved (such as solar panel installations).
Technical Differnence between both switches:
Power over Ethernet Switch and Normal Switch are both networking devices that are used to connect multiple devices together in a network. However, there are some key differences between the two:
Power Source:
Normal Switch: A normal switch does not have the ability to provide power to devices connected to it. It relies on external power sources to function.
Switch POE: It has the ability to provide power to devices connected to it through the Ethernet cables. This eliminates the need for separate power cables and makes it easier to install devices in locations where a power outlet may not be readily available.
Device Compatibility:
Normal Switch: A normal switch can only be used with devices that have their own power sources, such as computers, routers, and switches.
Switch POE: It can be used with both powered and non-powered devices. Non-powered devices, such as IP phones and wireless access points, can be powered through the Ethernet cable by the switch POE.
Cost:
Switch POE: It is generally more expensive than a normal switch due to the added functionality of being able to provide power to devices. And, if you buy a switch that can provide power, on the other hand, it will also save you other expenses. For example, it can reduce the need to buy power supplies and cables.
Normal Switch: A normal switch is generally less expensive than a switch POE. However, if you are looking to power devices, you will need to purchase a that.
